    THE BURIED CHURCH OF ST. GUILLERMO
    PHILIPPINES

    In the 1984 the church of St Guillermo was buried
    under 18 feet of volcanic ash following the eruption
    of the volcanic Mount Pinatubo.
    Fortunately the church was a bit taller than that.
    Rather than dig the church out with all the problems
    that would have entailed, the ever-practical Filipinos
    found a simpler solution - knock out a new door 18
    feet higher up than the old one and carry on as if
    nothing had happened.

    Today the church of St Guillermo continues to
    function, but with a lower ceiling than formerly.
    Christians have always been fond of high vaulted
    auditoria - this is the first known practical use of
    such buildings.
