THE BURIED CHURCH OF ST. GUILLERMO PHILIPPINES In the 1984 the church of St Guillermo was buried under 18 feet of volcanic ash following the eruption of the volcanic Mount Pinatubo. Fortunately the church was a bit taller than that. Rather than dig the church out with all the problems that would have entailed, the ever-practical Filipinos found a simpler solution - knock out a new door 18 feet higher up than the old one and carry on as if nothing had happened. Today the church of St Guillermo continues to function, but with a lower ceiling than formerly. Christians have always been fond of high vaulted auditoria - this is the first known practical use of such buildings. For more churches, click HERE |
